An entry-level job for lab technologists usually requires a bachelors degree in medical technology or life sciences. Medical lab technicians (lab techs), on the other hand, need only an accredited associate's degree program in clinical laboratory science. Coursework emphasizes laboratory skills, including genetic testing program procedures, genetic screening, and lab management.

Medical laboratory technologists can obtain a specialty certification, such as biotechnology or medical biology. For credentialing information, visit the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. Employment of medical lab techs is projected to grow 16% in the coming years. An increase in genetic screening programs is expected to better diagnosis of medical conditions, such as cancer or type II diabetes. NCLEX Exam Prep

The NCLEX, National Council Licensure Examination, is a nursing certification exam for nurse licensing in the United States. To ensure high standards in the nursing profession, each state board of nursing requires candidates for licensure to pass the appropriate NCLEX examination, NCLEX-PN for vocational or practical nurses, and the NCLEX-RN for registered nurses. The NCLEX is administered as a computer-based exam, taken at a Pearson Professional Center. The Physiology category contains the majority of the questions on the exam. Topics may include growth disorders, human development, and common infectious diseases of children. Effective Care Practices make up 30% of all NCLEX questions, covering safety issues in patient care, particularly in the administration of medicines.

Health Promotion questions are 15% of the NCLEX examination. Questions under this category deal with birth control measures, pregnancy, labor and delivery. Also covered is infant care, and sexually transmitted infections. Mental Health test areas pertain to patients with psychiatric problems. Questions cover information on depression, schizophrenia, organic mental disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, and anxiety.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarship programs and Pell grants only account for a third of total financial aid packages. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. Please make use of financial aid calculators online to see if you qualify for need-based financial aid or a fee waiver. In fact, millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid were late in submitting required scholarship application forms. Please note that the official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Filing taxes early is recommended, but using estimates for FAFSA from previous years is possible provided the correct data is updated later.

Academic scholarships are highly competitive, and are usually awarded either by the admissions office, or individual academic departments. Loan programs generally issue loans based on the credit history of the applicant and any co-signer. This is in contrast to federal loan programs that focus on need-based criteria. Financial aid may be administered through Charter Oak State College scholarship program. Alternatively, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. The College Board Scholarship Search service advertises several thousand sources for possible scholarship funds. Trade unions may offer academic scholarships and other financial assistance for students of union members.
